Some of the projects realized by Van Straaten are described below.
The Complete Rembrandt
The Complete Rembrandt took place in the Beurs van Berlage in Amterdam from 1 July till 5 September 2009. It was the biggest Rembrandt exhibition ever, with all paintings and etchings by Rembrandt and most of his relevant drawings in high-quality, full-scale reproductions displayed in a chronological order.
The Complete Rembrandt was de perfection of the successful exhibition Rembrandt: All His Paintings, which had been organized in the Beurs van Berlage in the summer of 2006. Since then, the exhibition has been touring the world, visiting countries like Chile, Canada, Israel, India, Syria, Egypt and Tunisia.
All reproductions for The Complete Rembrandt were printed digitally by Van Straaten as well as the striking façade banners and the tower cloth on the exterior of the Beurs van Berlage. All the printed matter in a window dedicated to Rembrandt was done by Van Straaten too (see also http://www.thecompleterembrandt.nl/ or watch the film on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8Brg1v7cO0).
The reproductions of Rembrandt’s work were closely monitored by Ernst van de Wetering (1938), one of the best-known Dutch Rembrandt specialists and art historians.
Van de Wetering studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague to become an artist and art teacher. From 1961 until 1964, he worked part-time as an art teacher. In 1963, he began his studies of art history at the University of Amsterdam. Additionally, he worked as a draughtsman of microscopic sections at the Zoological Museum in Amsterdam from 1964 till 1968. In 1968, Ernst van de Wetering was appointed assistant at the Rembrandt Research Project (RRP), which had been set up in the same year. Soon afterwards, he became a member of the RRP team. In 1993, he became the chairman of this project group, which has the aim of studying Rembrandt’s painted work. From 1969 till 1987, he worked as an art historian at the Central Laboratory for Objects of Arts and Science in Amsterdam (currently the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage). A professor of art history at the University of Amsterdam since 1987, Ernst van de Wetering has published extensively not only on Rembrandt and historic painting techniques but also on the theory and ethics of conservation and restoration. He has taught and lectured in many countries on Rembrandt research and restoration theory. Ever since his studies at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Ernst van de Wetering has practised on and off as a painter.
Louwman Museum te Wassenaar.
The Louwman Museum is the new accommodation of the Louwman Collection: hundreds of historic cars collected in the course of many years by the Louwman family, the importers of Toyota. Since 2010, part of the collection, considered the finest privately owned car collection in the world, has been open to the public.
The museum aims at providing as complete a picture of the car industry as possible with some exhibited cars dating from the industry’s earliest beginnings, about 125 years ago. The collection is based on such criteria as time period, body work shape, technology and origin.
All background cloths are the work of Van Straaten – a unique accomplishment, as some of these are 45 metres wide and 5 metres high (and yet made in one piece), glued directly to the wall.

Our Cars: A Spin through Time

A high-profile exhibition that took place in the Beurs van Berlage in the summer of 2010 about the special, often emotional relationship that people have with cars. Onze Auto’s (Dutch for ‘Our Cars’) took the visitors for a spin through time, featuring the most important cars ever. For many it was a nostalgic and sensational visit to a motorway frozen in time (see also www.onzeautos.nl).
