Conditions for submitting digital files
See below for these submission specifications or download them in PDF (downloaden als PDF.).
• The conditions below are to be complied with.
• Artwork incorrectly submitted may lead to additional DTP costs.
• You can contact our experienced DTP employees for advice and tips at all times.
• File dimensions are always WIDTH x HEIGHT.
General
• We work with Apple Mac systems. It would therefore be convenient, if the submitted files are Mac-based as well. Files made under Windows with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Quark XPress (mostly) cause no problems.
Files made in Corel Draw need to be exported to paths (Adobe Illustrator vectors) and stored as AI files before being sent to Van Straaten.
With complex files, however, problems may occur.
• If possible, allow for about 5cm additional image at the margins (for reasons of deviating confection). This recommendation is especially important for duplex printing on cloth.
Important image elements (e.g. text and logo) are to be kept at least 5.5cm from the edge (to allow for the hem and rings).
With pennants and banners these elements are to be kept within a safe margin of 5 to 15cm (depending on the thickness of the tube used).
• Send the file (or the details of a possible FTP address) to your contact at the sales department. Large files can be sent via YouSendIt, for example.
In many cases there is no need to create large files (see the resolution table below). TIFF files can be stored with LZW compression.
• When submitting the data per CD/DVD, always attach a print-out of the files to be printed. In the event of critical jobs, a matchprint or high-res proof is even better, of course.
• Files submitted by e-mail are to be accompanied by a low-res PDF or JPEG file, so that the sales department can also see what needs to be made (do not add these to a ZIP file).
• Colour references need to be stated, if relevant (Pantone colours, not RAL), so that we can match them as closely as possible. The delivery time may get under pressure, if no reference is added.
Illustrator CS5 and lower
• Ensure that every file is the right size (1 : 10 works best), so do not combine various formats in a single document (for reasons of further processing by our prepress department).
• Make certain that the lay-out is not hampered by any dead weight.
• Do not set image elements to overprint, for they will disappear with further processing, and this is not always noticed immediately.
• Always convert used fonts into paths (character contours/outlines). Always send fonts along if any text adjustments are to be made.
• Do not forget to send along photographs, unless they are embedded.
Photoshop CS5 and lower
• Store image material as TIFF in CMYK with LZW compression without any layers.
• Do not submit any (colour-separated) DCS files.
• Put images with spot colours together. State any PMS colour codes. We will match them as closely as possible.
• RGB files submitted will be converted into CMYK.
InDesign CS5 and lower
- Do not forget to send imported files along, such as illustrations, photographs and other scanned images. The same applies to all fonts used.
QuarkXpress 7 and lower
• Do not forget to send imported files along, such as illustrations, photographs and other scanned images. The same applies to all fonts used.
Note: PDF files (certified) are usually generated from Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or QuarkXPress. It may be convenient if you send the entire open file along, so that we can make any minor corrections.
For these certified PDF files the same guidelines apply as for the programs mentioned above.
• Always convert used fonts into paths (character contours/outlines) or send fonts along if any text adjustments are to be made.
• Add imported illustrations and/or scans if possible (so that we can make colour adjustments if necessary), also if they are embedded.
• Do not convert PMS colours into CMYK values. We will match them as closely as possible.
• Do not use any overprint options, for image elements in overprint disappear in further processing.
Submitted files not fully made in conformity with these conditions may lead to price adjustments and a later delivery date.
Note: do not submit any documents created in Microsoft Word, Excell or PowerPoint. In some cases, they can be converted into a PDF file, but this format is not always suitable.
Files created by means of other programs can only be submitted in consultation with the DTP department.
Media• CD, DVD.
• Send these to your sales contact and mail a low-res JPEG/PDF file of all data to your sales contact, so that the sales contact can clearly see what needs to be produced. Important: state the correct sizes/dimensions in width x height.
FTP server
• Send an e-mail requesting the upload data (no files) to: studio@vanstraaten.com
You will receive a reply with your login data to send your files to our FTP server.
Important! As our network connection is slow, make certain that these files do not exceed 200MB.
• Documents are to be formatted in proportion, preferably 100% or 10% of the final size.
• Submit the documents at 10% of the real size, e.g. 1000dpi (1:1 100dpi). For larger-size cloths the resolution can be reduced to 350dpi, 240dpi, 180dpi etc. See the table below for the resolutions per printer:
